Llanero Indigenous Groups

Settlements on the Orinoco River

The Llanera ethnic group developed along the Orinoco River, in the wide savannahs of the territories of Colombia and Venezuela, between the Guaviare, Meta and Arauca rivers. It is considered that the Guahibo indigenous people are the main group that lives in the Colombian-Venezuelan plains region and that some ethnic variants that are difficult to identify have emerged around them, which is why the "guajibos" are considered ancestral inhabitants of the savanna area. Within these racial variants, the Sikuani and the Chiricoa stand out, nomads who obtained their sustenance from hunting, the collection of vegetables and to a large extent from the exchange with riverside groups such as the Piapoco, inhabitants of the rapids and islands of the Orinoco, Meta and Guaviare rivers, dedicated to fishing. Other indigenous groups that are also mentioned are the Achagua, horticulturists in Casanare and Vichada, the Jirara and Tunebo in the western part of Arauca, the Otomaco, Sáliba and Yaruro in the lower Apure, Arauca and middle Orinoco and the Guayupe in the plain lands of the Ariari river.
